History

The old days...
Humble Beginnings - The Tin Shed, circa 1981

20 year anniversary

In September 1902, Mr William Gocher defied the law by swimming in daylight. His actions and similar actions by others forced the authorities to confront the issue of daytime bathing and surfing, which grew rapidly to become a national pastime. Its dangers soon became apparent. Small groups of experienced surfers formed groups to rescue people from the unfamiliar environment.

Similarly, the Sunshine Beach Surf Life Saving Club began when 25 local surfers, persuaded by local Sunshine Beach identity Marjorie Tripp, began the club.

We started patrolling the beach at Sunshine in the season of 1980/81. At that time we had only 8 patrols of 5-6 members each. In those early days, our Clubhouse consisted of a small, tin, garden shed (left). This Clubhouse has gradually been upgraded and renovated over the years, with the last million dollar face lift being completed at the end of 1998.

Junior Activities (Nippers) at the Sunshine Beach Surf Lifesaving Club began in the 1993/94 season, with 47 enthusiastic members.

Over the 20 years the Club has established an enviable record in lifesaving activities and can proudly state that "no lives have been lost between the flags at Sunshine Beach".
