Our History
1986/87 VALE - PATRICK FAHEY The passing of club member Pat Fahey was a great loss to everyone. Although in his first season as an active member, Pat impressed all those who met him with his desire to learn and willingness to serve the club and community. As a mark of respect to the memory of Pat, the club named a perpetual trophy in his honour. Called the Pat Fahey Memorial Trophy, it was to be awarded annually to the best patrol member in their first year. This year saw the club break new ground, with regular entries in board, ski and taplin relays, and a strong IRB crew. MARINE STINGER Marine stingers were a huge problem over the 1986 Christmas holidays, and well into February and March of 1987 - mega litres of vinegar were splashed around, with 300 stings (4 serious) being recorded in this season alone. (Note: ice is now used instead.) The State IRB Titles were held for the first time at Sunshine Beach on the 6th and 7th June of 1987 - and our own IRB team's efforts were rewarded with two silver and two bronze medallions. On the fundraising side of the club, a new innovation of the Freezer Raffle was introduced (a new fridge full of food), as well as fancy dress nights, golf days and Miss Surf Girl. A fabulous New Years Eve party was organized by the Bar Committee, attended by more than 400 members and guests. 1987/88 The main achievement for the club during the 87/88 season was when our team of seven members came second in the Sunshine Coast Branch Patrol Championships. This competition consists of five life saving sections, on a run-swim-run, a board rescue, resuscitation technique and timing, a life saving task and theory papers on general life saving knowledge and communications. The members who represented us throughout the competition were: Scott Braby, Russell Green, Ramon Pettigrove, Jon Wadling, Rob White, Wayne Wren and Mike Harding. DEARLOVE RELAY TEAM WINS GOLD The second achievement of note was the winning of the club's first gold medal at a State Championship carnival, held at Kurrawa Beach on the Gold Coast. Our Dearlove relay team consisted of Noel Mason, Shaun Haddrill, Ramon Pettigrove, Russell Green and Scott Braby. NOOSA SHIRE COUNCIL TROPHY Finally it was pleasing to win the Noosa Shire Trophy in its inaugural year - the trophy was donated by the Council for annual competition between surf clubs in the Noosa Shire. Sunshine Beach 1988/89 This season can be remembered best for its most inclement weather. Almost every weekend the patrols were submited to rain, wind and turbulent seas, which necessitated the beach being closed on several occasions. Credit was certainly due to the volunteer patrol members who managed to endure the elements and survive the season - the dedication and ability to 'soldier on' which continues to the present day. On the general carnival scene, Sunshine Beach was represented at Branch, State and National levels. Our team of Russell Green, Scott Braby, Jon Wadling, Ken Moss, Ross Sanderson and Ramon Pettigrove won the Sunshine Coast Branch Patrol Championships. The club was also represented at the Nutri-Grain Iron Man Series by Andrew Meikle, Scott Braby and Ken Moss. FIRE UP THE BBQ! Throughout the years there has always been a small army of club members working diligently behind the scenes, providing steak sandwiches, sausages, tea, coffee and cool drinks at club functions, working bees, carnivals and post patrol BBQs. Two such people are Rhondda and Ken Brown, who joined the club in January 1987, having arrived from Rosebud, Victoria, following Ken's retirement from the Victorian Education Department. It wasn't long before Ken and Rhondda were firing up the BBQ and providing tasty food for lifesavers and, as with most life saving clubs, the volunteers at the all important working bees - starting at 7am means that a hearty breakfast is most welcome around mid-morning! Rhondda and Ken were awarded the Club's 'Supporters of the Year' trophy in 1993/94, with Rhondda receiving it again in 1994/95. She shared the award with Matt Blair in the 1998/99 season. Being on the Social Committee Ken and Rhondda have been helped over the years by Aub Cherry and Bryan Dolan, who have proved to be excellent cooks as well. When necessary Rhondda obtains help form other willing club members to assist at larger gatherings - all these helpers cannot be named individually, but they knkow who they are, and the club will be eternally grateful for their efforts. Each summer surf season, Rhondda and Ken have at least 15 scheduled BBQs, including one major post-carnival BBQ each year, where they serve food and drinks all day on the beach. They are as keen as they were when they first volunteered their services, and the food is even better than ever! More... |
